About

Deosai National Park is one of the highest plateaus in the world, with an average elevation of around 4,114 metres. It lies between Astore and Skardu, and Astore is the traditional gateway from the west, entered through Chilim. The plateau is a wide open alpine plain of rolling hills, streams, and wildflowers, surrounded by Himalayan and Karakoram peaks. It was declared a national park in 1993 to protect the endangered Himalayan brown bear, and it is also home to marmots, ibex, wolves, and many birds. The journey from Skardu to Astore through Deosai is about 152 km and takes around 4 to 5 hours. There are no permanent hotels in the park, so most visitors camp near areas like Kala Pani or Sheosar Lake.
