Safety notice

Disclaimer

GB Road Updates is a travel safety information service. Please read this notice carefully before relying on anything published here to plan a journey.

Road conditions in Gilgit-Baltistan can change within minutes. Never treat a status shown here as a guarantee that a road is safe or passable.

Best-effort information

Every status, alert and clearance on this site is published on a best-effort basis from two kinds of sources: official advisories (such as NHA, FWO, district administration and police notices) and reports submitted by travellers, drivers and local contributors. Reports are reviewed before publication, but we cannot inspect every kilometre of road, and there will always be a gap between what is happening on the ground and what is shown here.

Why conditions change so fast

  • Landslides and rockfall on the Karakoram Highway and valley link roads.
  • Snowfall and ice on high passes such as Babusar, Shandur, Deosai and Khunjerab.
  • Glacial melt, flash floods and river cuttings during summer afternoons.
  • Unannounced maintenance, blasting closures and one-way traffic windows.
  • Weather that closes a route in one direction while the other stays open.

Your responsibility before departure

  • Confirm current conditions with official sources and local contacts on the day you travel.
  • Check the timestamp on every update — an alert from yesterday may no longer describe the road today.
  • Exercise your own judgement, especially on remote, high-altitude or high-risk sections with limited mobile coverage.
  • Carry adequate fuel, warm clothing, water and a plan for delays or overnight stops, and avoid travelling these roads after dark.
  • Follow instructions from police, FWO and road crews on site at all times.

No professional or emergency advice

This site is not an emergency service and is not a substitute for professional guidance from authorities, guides, mountain rescue or medical services. In an emergency call Rescue 1122 or the GB Police helpline 15.
