Gonar Farm Rock Art

Gonar Farm is a quiet village on the Indus with a well-preserved cluster of Buddhist petroglyphs, including many stupa carvings. It is one of the lesser-visited rock-art sites east of Chilas.

About

Gonar Farm lies on the banks of the Indus, about an hour's drive east of Chilas on the Karakoram Highway, followed by a walk of around 30 minutes. At the edge of the village, a large rock in an open area is covered with carvings, with steep mountains rising behind it. Most of the petroglyphs here are related to Buddhism, and many of them are images of stupas. Because fewer people visit this site, the carvings are better preserved and clearer than at some better-known places. A few non-Buddhist engravings, such as plants and handprints, can also be seen. Gonar Farm is a rewarding stop for those who want to see rock art in a quiet setting.
