About
Bireno Suspension Bridge, also known as the Danyor Suspension Bridge, crosses the Hunza River and links Danyor with the area of Karakoram International University. It is about 510 feet long and 8 feet wide, and was built by the local contractor Ahmad Ali Bireno, who came from Hunza and had no formal engineering training. Before the bridge, people crossed the river on a traditional goatskin raft known as a jaalo. The bridge changed life in the area by connecting Danyor with the main road and Gilgit. It was renovated in 2017 in recognition of its cultural and tourism value, and the approaches on both sides were improved. Today the bridge is a favourite stop for walkers and photographers. It gently sways in the wind, and the views of the Hunza River and the surrounding mountains are excellent. On the Gilgit side, close to the university, there is also a preserved Buddhist rock carving site.
