Chinese Cemetery, Danyor

The Chinese Cemetery in Danyor Valley is a memorial to the Chinese engineers and workers who gave their lives building the Karakoram Highway in the 1960s and 1970s. It is a quiet, respectful place that reflects the friendship between Pakistan and China.

About

The Chinese Cemetery is located in Danyor Valley, about 10 km from Gilgit City. It was established in the early 1970s as the final resting place of the Chinese engineers and workers who died during the construction of the Karakoram Highway, often called the eighth wonder of the world. The graves are laid out neatly, with tombstones carrying inscriptions in Chinese characters, and a memorial monument stands at the site. It is a place of remembrance rather than sightseeing, and a reminder of the human cost of building the highway through some of the toughest mountain terrain on earth. Visitors from Pakistan and China come to pay their respects. Its location near the Bireno Suspension Bridge and Danyor Valley makes it easy to include in a short Gilgit tour.
