Attabad Lake, Gojal

Attabad Lake is a stunning turquoise lake in the Gojal region of Hunza, stretching about 21 km through the Karakoram mountains. Created by a landslide in January 2010, it has become one of the most photographed and visited places in Gilgit-Baltistan.

About

Attabad Lake was formed in January 2010 when a massive landslide blocked the Hunza River near Attabad village. Over the following months the water rose and eventually reached about 21 km in length and more than 100 metres in depth. The disaster displaced many families and submerged parts of the Karakoram Highway, a loss the community still remembers. Today the lake is known for its deep turquoise colour, which changes with the light and the season. High mountains rise straight from the water, and the road along the lake offers constant views. Boating, jet skiing, and fishing are popular, and several guesthouses and hotels around the lake make it a comfortable base for travellers. A boat ride across the lake is the best way to appreciate its scale and colour, and the tunnels of the new highway along the shore are an interesting sight in themselves. In winter the lake can freeze, giving it a very different and quiet beauty.
