Passu Cones, Passu

The Passu Cones, also known as the Cathedral Peaks, are a row of sharp, jagged mountains rising above Passu village in Upper Hunza. Their dramatic silhouette against the sky makes them one of the most famous and photographed sights in Pakistan.

About

Standing above the village of Passu, the Passu Cones are a line of pointed rock peaks that look like the spires of a giant cathedral. The shape is so distinctive that it is recognised across Pakistan, and the peaks appear on postcards, posters, and travel covers of Gilgit-Baltistan. The best views are from Passu village, the area near the Rainbow Bridge, and the roadside viewpoints along the Karakoram Highway. Light changes the character of the cones through the day: soft pink at sunrise, sharp and golden in the afternoon, and dark and dramatic at dusk. Below the cones, the Hunza River, green village fields, and the Passu Glacier complete one of the great mountain scenes of the Karakoram. The area is also a base for easy walks and glacier treks.
