About
Tolti is the district headquarters of Kharmang and lies on the left bank of the Indus River, roughly 35 km southeast of the Indus and Shyok confluence. It sits in a green valley of fields, orchards, and traditional villages. Historically, Tolti was a stop on the trade route between Skardu and Kargil, which was cut off by the partition of the region after the First Kashmir War. Today it is the main town of the district, with basic services and the starting point for visits to waterfalls and villages further up the valley. Tolti has the last proper facilities before the more remote villages upstream, so travellers often use it as a base for a day or overnight stay.
