Hispar Glacier

Hispar Glacier is one of the longest glaciers outside the polar regions, flowing about 49 km from Hispar La down towards Nagar. Joined with the Biafo Glacier, it forms the famous 100 km Hispar-Biafo glacial traverse.

About

Hispar Glacier flows for roughly 49 km through the Hispar Valley, ending near Hispar village, the last village of Nagar. At the Hispar La pass, at 5,128 metres, it meets the Biafo Glacier, creating the Hispar-Biafo traverse, a route of about 100 km that is counted among the longest glacial journeys outside the polar regions. The glacier is surrounded by some of the Karakoram's greatest peaks in the Hispar Muztagh, including Distaghil Sar and Kunyang Chhish. The Hispar River, a tributary of the Hunza River, begins from its meltwater. The full traverse is a serious high-altitude expedition of around 12 to 14 days, usually done from Askole in Baltistan to Hispar in Nagar, or the other way round. Visitors who do not want the full trek can still visit Hispar village and enjoy the views of the glacier's lower part.
