About

Sarfaranga is a cold desert at around 7,500 feet (2,300 metres) above sea level, located on the road from Skardu to Shigar. Golden dunes, salty plains, and sandy flats stretch along the Indus River, with snow mountains rising on all sides. The desert is one of the highest in the world and shows a rare contrast: sand and snow in the same view. Sunsets are especially beautiful, and the clear sky makes it a fine place for stargazing at night. Since 2017, the Sarfaranga Cold Desert Rally has taken place here every year, bringing jeeps, bikes, and visitors for one of the biggest adventure events in Gilgit-Baltistan. At other times it is a quiet place for walks, photography, and jeep rides.
