Shigar Fort (Fong Khar)

Shigar Fort, known locally as Fong Khar, the Palace on the Rock, is a 17th-century royal fortress restored as a heritage museum and hotel. It is one of the finest examples of heritage conservation in Gilgit-Baltistan.

About

Shigar Fort, locally called Fong Khar, meaning Palace on the Rock, dates back about 400 years to the 17th century. It was built by the Raja of Shigar and served as the royal residence and administrative centre of the ruling dynasty. The fort was restored by the Aga Khan Development Network and now operates as a heritage museum and boutique hotel managed by Serena Hotels. Visitors can walk through the restored rooms, see traditional Balti woodwork and craftsmanship, and have a meal in the fort's grape-covered garden restaurant. The surroundings are just as memorable: orchards, old village lanes, a centuries-old maple tree near the fort, and mountains rising on every side. It is the heart of Shigar's cultural heritage and a perfect first stop in the valley.
